The giant internet service provider AT&T Inc. is holding talks with Hollywood studios and recording labels regarding needed steps to combat online movie and music piracy. They focused on developing a technology that spots offshore content pirates who use its network to upload illegal copies of movies and music.
This endeavor makes AT&T the very first major Internet carrier to carry out unambiguous engineering efforts to chunk piracy at the network level. AT&T thinks that if they are able to have a network that is safe from piracy, they will have an edge over the others in terms of distribution deals with movie studios and record labels. AT&T senior VP James Cicconi told the Los Angeles Times in an interview:
We do recognize that a lot of our future business depends on exciting and interesting content.
Some technologies are against the AT&T’s envision and are saying that the move will just create an “arms race” between AT&T’s antipiracy efforts and those looking for technical means to avoid the measures. Anyway, AT&T has pledged to work within the privacy laws and principles on online freedoms set by the Federal Communications Commission and target repeat offenders only.
Now, the real question that raises its hood is that whether AT&T will be able to make the right decision decisions in context to ownership, licensing, and copyright law?
