The highly popular Audioblogger that allowed users to post any number of audio blogs through telephone calls will close shop from November 01, 2006.

Odeo, which runs audioblogger made this announcement:

Audioblogger is an independent product, run by Odeo, Inc., a small startup company in San Francisco. (It was originally started by Noah Glass/ListenLab and made part of Odeo when he co-founded the company.) We offer it on contract with Google/Blogger, but are not otherwise affiliated with Google or Blogger. Given our limited resources, we have to make tough decisions about what to focus on. And we’ve come to the difficult decision that Audioblogger costs us too much in time and money to continue to run.

Anyway, it was quite heartening to see Odeo suggesting the names of similar service providers that has no affiliation with Odeo or Audioblogger whatsoever.

There are at least a couple other services that do what Audioblogger does.

The first, which has a free option, is called Gabcast. It offers everything Audioblogger does, plus a free 1-800 number (for those in the U.S.), international numbers, a Flash player for your posts, and more. There are both free and paid options for Gabcast. Another service, Hipcast, offers similar functionality, as a paid service.

Well, I’m amazed that Audioblogger clones are now getting endorsement from the original company. However, it felt good really.

Anyway, it is sad to see Audioblogging going away.
