The new domain extension .mobi is up for general sale for today. The domain is an attempt to boost the use of mobile devices as Web surfing platforms.
Already over 13,000 names have been registered in the period that was reserved for trademark holders. The telecom industry believes that this will encourage and boost use of the internet via mobile phones as PDAs.
However, there are concerns all around. Critics are saying that with the proliferation of new domains will be a cause of fraud. For example, Verizon, which registered Verizon.mobi says that it did so to prevent the domain name from being squatted and/or abused later.
In my opinion, this is a good step in order to encourage mobile surfing. However, the question is that mobile Web surfing is rapidly growing. So does not this look superfluous? It seems so at first glance, however, notwithstanding the problems likely to arise out of fraud etc I am inclined to keep mum on it. I won’t say it is a good move, neither I would denounce it.
