Google and News Corp struck a deal that in which Google will pay Fox Interactive Media at least 900 million dollars subject to certain web traffic targets are met for providing search and advertisements to a host of websites owned by it including the world’s top social networking site MySpace. FoxSports.com has been kept out of this deal owing to existing contracts with Microsoft and MSN.
With this deal in place now, MySpace users will be able to use Google to search for groups and friends through the site from coming October. Also, we will see the ubiquitous Google ads in the site.
This deal has actually put in place the speculation bazaar as to who would eventually provide search services to MySpace as it is widely believed that MSN and Yahoo! were also in the reckoning.
Great deal for Google as the site is nearing 100,000,000 profiles. Ross Levinsohn, President, Fox Interactive Media said that a quarter of a million people were joining MySpace each day!
So is the deal good? As I have said before, MySpace is going to hold on to the numero uno position when it comes to social networking sites for some time to come. I do not know what the certain web traffic targets fixed in order to justify the 900-million dollar deal, but there is a very good probability that with the movement that MySpace is, it would be a win-win situation for both the companies by a long shot.
