The headline could have been the other way round as well - Sony starts using grouper to promote its films and TV content. Therefore, how you take it is up to you. The news is that video-sharing site Grouper, which Sony acquired in August for a whopping $65 million (whopping because Grouper was almost an unknown site then), has launched ScreenBites - a channel that broadcasts short clips of Sony’s well-known film and television content.
Already, there are around hundred clips from some popular hits like Big Day, Groundhog Day, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men etc.
The best thing about ScreenBites is that unlike other studio content that disables embedding the videos to other sites like MySpace, Grouper is allowing this possible. You can embed the videos with the Sony film and TV content clips to your blog, social network site etc. There is a commercial catch there as the videos have ads in the end marketing the DVD of the Sony movie! Intelligent, isn’t it?
Now we know what exactly Sony had in mind when it acquired Grouper. It makes really good business sense.
