Duplicate stories on the same topic are a fact in the social news syndicating sites like Digg, Netscape and Reddit. Although nothing could be done as the all the stories are posted with different urls so it’s hard to recognize that they deal basically with the same content.
According to Stephen Searer of Sociallygiven blog here’s what Digg can do. His comments are addressed to Digg’s CEO Jay Adelson who asked for suggestions so that Digg could be improved further.

Like take the story of Saddam’s hanging you will find number of stories submitted and all dealing with same topic. The above screen shot was taken after searching the story in Digg and Stephen wants all these stories to be grouped together so that it becomes easier for reader to find and judge the stories.

And what these sites can do is like Google news the can use a software upgrade that will see all the possible similar stories bunched together. As the reader wants to read all the news and from different sources and opinions they will get what they want and more over they will not have to search the site to see the entire submitted stories. The digs will decide what the better source is and who had the best story.

That’s what the Podcasts give where the stories are grouped according to topic and the viewers get all the info in one place. The allegations that the top diggers take all the honors will also be put to rest. If the suggestions get implemented the Digg will become a lot better place.
