You may or may not like the issue that what is in here to learn from the adult industry so that the traditional media also enjoy the fruits of unprecedented success that the adult industry has achieved making it a $2.5 billion monster.
Yes there are moral and ethical issues involved but to look at the brighter side there are lessons for us all in the media to learn from them.
Adult media and sites work in tandem with latest technology, partner suggestions and customers feedbacks so as to remain ahead of others and to have loyal audience.
We will have to concede that sex does sell that’s why nude/porn sites are major hit but they are the early adopters of the new technologies and networking that is so very essential part of the success.
They have mastered the art of having partners who will promptly display small thumb nails of the content or a short snippet of the video just enough to bait the customer into buying the stuff.
They were also the first to realize the importance of networking and also that how much the competitors are important. They found they may have a good product but as is the case with everything it won’t cater to needs of all the customers so why not link competitors also so that if they do not sell anything at least they can help in the sale of others were the customer might find content to his liking.
They knew the importance of partners and according to a adult site consultant (who wanted his name withheld) said that can even pay more than the monthly subscription fee as a commission to affiliates just to keep them happy. Editors and big guns of the site also make themselves available to partners and heed to their suggestions.
What can Traditional media do?
Here is what the co-founder of the Affiliate Summit conference, Shawn Collins, is suggesting to the traditional media, he says they can start off with a little bit more access to their content and also distribute little teasers in audio, video or print form in order to generate interest.
He says that the television or the audio-visual medium can start with affiliating itself with the video search engine sites instead of scorning them.
The illegal videos and the serials that were pulled from the YouTube did more good to the serial then harm. They can post teasers, small videos of their content in order to arouse curiosity and also increase their reach.
He says Amazon.com can start with distributing few pages of the latest books to partners which when displayed can increase the interest and also sales but here the critical part is that traditional media will have to find a way to keep its affiliates happy. Reuter provides this service but takes all the revenue without sharing a penny with the poor site that hosted their content.
No doubt good content is necessary and also having a good business model with atomization and RSS are also necessary but the traditional media will have to sooner than later learn the need of adopting new technologies, learn to recognize the changing tastes of audience and also to learn the need of having good partners who can suggest improvements other wise a downward spiral that has begin will continue.
We may see more traditional media making foray into the web via acquisitions in order to gain more foothold and audience.
