The revived proposal of assigning ‘.xxx’ instead of ‘.com’ internet domain name to the pornographic sites is still hanging in the air and now, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is on the verge to take a decision on whether to approve the domain name or not.
Well, the proposal of assigning ‘.xxx’ internet domain name to the pornographic sites back in 2006 was rejected owing to the worry of putting into force the world’s laws governing pornography as stated by ICANN. But, some think that it was rejected due to the strong opposition by some adult sites.
ICANN has now revealed its plans to vote as early as next week to come to a final decision. Mark Kernes, a board member with the industry trade group Free Speech Coalition said:
One of the criteria is that it (must) have general support among the industry it’s supposed to serve, and it does not. I have not met one single webmaster or adult video producer that is in favor of `.xxx,’ and I’ve met a lot of them.
Some say that if the new law is enacted, the porno sites’ owners will keep both the ‘.com’ and the ‘.xxx’ domain thereby adding to the total pornography on the web.
If the proposal is accepted, it would become a bit easy for the parents to block all the ‘.xxx’ domains through software but that alone won’t do any good owing to its voluntary nature. It would be interesting to see how ICANN is going to define pornography.
