Finally, the revived proposal of assigning ‘.xxx‘ instead of ‘.com‘ internet domain name to the pornographic sites has been rejected by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). It was seven years back in 2001 when the idea was proposed and it created hype last week when ICANN was nearing its decision. The proposal was rejected by nine votes to five. Paul Twomey, ICANN chief executive refrained from the vote. Dr Vinton Cerf, chairman of ICANN cited:

This decision was the result of very careful scrutiny and consideration of all the arguments. That consideration had led a majority of the board to believe that the proposal should be rejected.

Well, the group supporting the .xxx domain were disappointed by the decision and said to take the issue further. It was voted out by the overseer of the net’s addressing system. ICANN has already rejected the proposal two times.

ICM Registry argues that the ‘.xxx’ domain would act as a quality check and would permit individuals and families to shun adult content to simply filter it. Moreover, ICANN said it would not entertain more proposals for so-called top level domains like .xxx at the moment.
