Having rejected the proposal of assigning “.xxx” internet domain name to the pornographic sites back in 2006, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has revived its proposal once again to create an online red-light community. ICANN members cites that they didn’t rejected the proposal in 2006 owing the strong opposition by some adult sites but owing to the worry of putting into force the world’s laws governing pornography. ICANN, in an agreement with ICM, has also made certain changes lately that are ‘stronger provisions to ban child pornography and require labeling of Web sites with sexually explicit materials‘.
The revived proposal has been made public for comments. Some of the sites that are carrying this debate are IFFOR (in favor), which is powered by ICM Registry, and FightTheDotXXX (against the proposal). The public comment period will be open up to February 5, 2007. For viewing the comments, you can visit ICANN forum for the .xxx agreement. But, the proposal of assigning ‘.xxx’ domain instead of ‘.com’ will possibly face some serious opposition from the conservative groups as it happened last year.
Anyway, if the proposal is made official, the pornography sites would be subject to the new terms issued late Friday by the ICANN.
