Lycos is launching a new YouTube-like service - Lycos Cinema (beta) today that will have both full-length movies and real-time chat. This will allow video and movie producers to release their latest content on Lycos Cinema and get instant feedback from viewers.

To use the site, you must first register with Lycos. Mashable reports that the current beta is only viewable through IE on a PC and the clips are protected by Microsoft’s DRM.

There are about 1000 titles with average length of 90 minutes per clip. Naturally it will take a long time to load the flash, and in case your connection is less than broadband, you might find it absolutely irritating. However, a good feature of this is you can rewind the movies for re-watching.

Users can setup public or private rooms that support 10 people at a time. You can private message other users, or simply block unwanted message senders.

Lycos is hoping to earn revs through the well-beaten path - online ads. There would be most pre and post roll ads.

It is a good idea though I must say that are we ready yet for a 2-hour movie yet on YouTube-like video format?
