no space for sex offenders at myspace Is MySpace a safe space for minors? The question is largely unanswered despite the removal of more than 29,000 convicted sex offenders from the social networking site.

Just three months ago, MySpace admitted that it had detected some 7,000 profiles of sex offenders. After facing sharp criticisms from all quarters in USA, it has detected another 22,000 sex offenders and barred them from social networking.

MySpace has more than 100 million registered users. It takes 230,000 new entries each day. Is there any conformity that there are only 29,000 guilty profiles at MySpace? As per the latest count, there are more than 600,000 convicted sex offenders in USA. There might be other sex offender profiles, which MySpace does not know.

Now, the big question is: Can we make web a safe place for children? As of now, nearly half of the American teens use social networking sites. They are exposed to adults enticing for sexual relationship. They should be given strict instructions about various aspects of social networking. The parents should play a key role in this regard.

At the same time, the government should enact more stringent rules for adults. Take for instance, compulsory submission of credit card number or ID Proofs while signing up for social networking.

In the backdrop of this, I can say the recent action taken by MySpace is just the beginning.
