Recently, Victoria, the second most populous state in Australia announced to ban YouTube in 1,600 government-owned schools. Now, YouTube has been banned in Turkey by a court. The most interesting thing is that the Turkish people can still have access to the YouTube page through Firefox or any other proxy site.

It seems like they have banned just the site’s URL. When you type in the URL, the following message is displayed:

www.youtube.com sitesine erişim İstanbul 1. Sulh Ceza Mahkemesi’nin 2007/384 sayı ve 06.03.2007 tarihli kararı gereği engellenmiştir.

Well, site has been banned on the grounds that it hosted videos “insulting the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.” Paul Doany, head of Turk Telekom said with respect to the ban:

We are not in the position of saying that what YouTube did was an insult, that it was right or wrong. A court decision was proposed to us, and we are doing what that court decision says.

Anyway, a group of Turkish bloggers has said that they will try to fight this in Turkey, and get YouTube reinstated.
