Wiki software, the prime technology behind the big Wikipedia has now been used by British publisher Penguin in an attempt to create a web-based, shared novel dubbed ‘A Million Penguins’ that can be written, edited or read by anyone online. Penguin has started the project anticipating that a “believable fictional voice” can be created by different people of different cultures. Jeremy Ettinghausen, head of digital publishing at Penguin UK said:
This is an experiment. It may end up like reading a bowl of alphabet spaghetti. We are not making any predictions. It would be utterly fantastic if we could at the end create a print remix.
The interesting thing is that the novel’s first lines have already been written, edited and rewritten by people on http://www.amillionpenguins.com. The experimental novel will be online for at least six weeks. Penguin has claimed ‘A Million Penguins’ to be the first ‘Wiki’ novel.
