Travelistic, the YouTube-style video-sharing site launches today. It claims that it has more videos than any other travel site. The New York-based startup modeled the service such that it combines user-generated videos as well as professional content.
Like YouTube it has user-profile pages, messaging system also allows users to have network of friends and form groups. There is a page for every travel destination that are mashed up with Google Maps. You can also browse the ‘Featured’, ‘Top Ranked’ and ‘Most Viewed’. Just like YouTube you can embed the videos in external sites like your blogs or the social networks like MySpace and hi5.
As we can see social networks springing up every nanosecond catering to niche groups, we are also witnessing video-sharing communities catering to niche audience as well. As far as the idea behind the site is concerned, I would say that it is nothing short of brilliant. As travel is one of the biggest and most lucrative industries, the site may get some very good direct sponsors - both government and private agencies are likely to promote through it.
