The US has given Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or Icann, the organization formed in 1998 that oversees the Internet’s future more liberty for the next three years.

Icaan boss Dr Paul Twomey described the deal as a ‘major step forward for Icaan autonomy’.

It may be recalled that earlier, the US govt. has promised that it will give up the control of the Internet to private hands in the future without giving a timeframe.

The significance of this move can be gauged from the words of Dr Paul Twomey who said;

The big difference is that we will no longer have our work prescribed by the Department of Commerce and no longer have to report to them every six months with lots of hurdles for us to jump. The US has clearly stated that it wants full autonomy and that it is committed to that. It is talking the talk. The US government has stated its policy of wanting the management of DNS to be in the hands of the private sector and that Icann is the organisation charged with managing it.

Very good move indeed. The sooner the Internet loses control, the better it is. Because of this issue several countries had raised questions in the past as to who should control the Internet and the legitimacy behind such controls.
