Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, the pair behind the much famous Kazaa and Skype has dubbed their new online-video start-up as Joost. Until now, Joost was reffecred to as ‘Venice Project‘. Well, a company spokeswoman said that they choose the new name as they liked the ring of it. But, what’s in the name?

Anyway, the sole aim of Joost is to distribute high-quality video over the internet inexpensively and proficiently with the help of same peer-to-peer (P2P) technology that helped Friis and Zennstrom make Skype and Kazaa a success. But, the road ahead for the Joost is sensing the iTunes Movie stores and YouTube’s tight grip on the video-sharing market. An additional threat could come from the mounting numeral of sites that offer top cable and movie channels without permission.

Another tough challenge in front of Joost is to strike any marquee partnerships with top film or TV producers without which they won’t be able to induce studio executives to fetch their content to Joost. Well, Joost claim to offer its users a much better TV viewing experience with its TiVo-like control of the content and access to any show not considering the time of day.

While the company officials haven’t commnted on the date on which Joost will go live. The site is currently open for beta testers. The entry of Joost will certainly add to the ongoing competition going in the online video-sharing market.
