The so-called Digg of Europe, the Luxembourg-based Wikio has closed a Series ‘A’ round of funding totaling $5.3 million. The financing round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Gemini Israel Funds. Launched last June, Wikio is the first European blog and media search engine. It has launched English, German and Spanish versions of the site lately.
Wikio is an amalgam between user added and editorial-added news and blogs. Wikio’s editorial staff ranks and contributes stories but they also allow users to add and rank stories, very much like Digg. Pierre Chappaz, founder of Wikio, had the belief that Europe should have its own Digg, so he created Wikio.
While Wikio compares itself to Digg and Technorati, I think it needs to do a lot to make these words meet realism.
