Yahoo! can not sit silent when its rival Google is in a vigorous acquisition fray . The Sunnyvale, California-based search giant has today announced its acquisition of Rivals.com, one the best ranked sports sites with more than two million regular visitors.

Although, both the companies have not disclosed the financial details of the deal, it is believed that Yahoo! may take over the college sports site for about $100million. Why does this acquisition assume significant for Yahoo?

Yahoo! will certainly look forward to patch up the loopholes in its sports section and expand the community offering and publishing capabilities of Yahoo Sports.

Rivals.com has more than 100 college-specific sites. They are regularly updated with sports and recruiting information with special importance on football and basketball. It also follows high school sports to find out the top prospects for athletic scholarships.

Yahoo’s sports section has recorded more than 15.1 million visitors last month. It is second to ESPN, which has 17.6 million visitors. With this acquisition, Yahoo! will further enhance its sports section.
