As Yahoo! Mail nears its 10th anniversary, they have announced to lift all the caps on the e-mail storage. Starting in May 2007, Yahoo Mail users will have free unrestrained e-mail storage. As for now, the set storage limit is 1 GB per account with 2 GB for $20 per year premium users.
Currently, 250 million global users have access to Yahoo! Mail, which is more than any other service. Live.com has 228 million users and Gmail has 51 million users. This startling change is certain to put the competitors behind. Well, free e-mail storage limit for the Live.com users is 2GB and that for Gmail is 2.8GB, which is more than what Yahoo! Mail is offering at this point of time. This move will certainly augment the count of Yahoo! Mail users.
The announcement was made in response to the hotheaded escalation in attachment sizes as people share more photos, music and videos via e-mail. Yahoo co-founder David Filo said:
We are giving them no reason to ever have to delete old e-mails. You can keep stuff forever.
The present version of Yahoo! Mail was rolled out in 1997 when they acquired RocketMail and you know what? They offered a mere 4MB of email storage at that time. Can you just imagine what the heck could this 4MB storage do for you currently?
Although, Yahoo! Mail doesn’t offer OP access and forwarding like Gmail but apparently they have plans to fight all the competitors. I think they might roll out some more interesting features in the near future.
