Yahoo! is testing the waters to take a plunge into what had been the swimming pool of Apple and Microsoft in online music technology.

Fro this Yahoo! will sell Jesse McCartney’s new album ‘Right Where You Want Me’ from Hollywood Records in the unprotected MP3 format. This means that whoever buys the music can play it on any mp3 player like the iPod as MP3 files are the only type that will play on iPods besides those downloaded from iTunes.

But what about piracy and trading as the files will be unprotected? Well, I have no idea how Yahoo! is going to tackle this. Maybe there will be some form of protection in the future, but as things look now, there is not going to be any.

Meanwhile, Sebastian has revealed a ‘dirty little secret‘ of MS Zune. It is regarding sharing a file (which incidentally is one of the coolest features of Zune) through Wi-Fi. If you share a file through Wi-Fi, your Zune will DRM it and would be unusable for the recipient after 3 days. Now that includes all files, whether it is copyright protected or not. It may also be the file of the sound of your newborn baby that your wife sent you to cheer you up when you are off on a long tour. :-(
